exploded yesterday at the world's premiere marathon. the f.b.i. appealed to the public came this evening. the agent in charge, richard deslauriers asked the public for leads and photographs and summed up the investigation this way. >> at this time, there are no claims of responsibility. the range of suspects and motives remains wide open. >> pelley: investigators say this was one of the most photographed areas in the country yesterday. but did anyone capture the image of the person or persons who planted the bombs that killed at least three people and wounded more than 170 including spectator leann yawny. >> i'm alive. and being so close to the blast, you know, it could have turned out way worse. >> pelley: she was one of the lucky ones. 27 of the wounded remain in critical condition this evening. among the dead, eight-year-old martin richard of dorchester, massachusetts. and late today another of those killed was identified. 29-year-old krystle campbell of medfordford. we've also learned more about the two bombs planted near the finish line. they were filled with nails and ball bearings
director of the f.b.i. is with us. john, what have you been learning? >> well, they're looking very hard at that piece of closed circuit television security camera video. they've gotten a individual who they're interested in because he's carrying two backpacks. now you know how early it is and how information will shift and change and that's an important caveat but when you have two devices possibly contained in backpacks and you have an image of somebody moving before that carrying two backpacks that could be someone who's got his backpack and one he's carrying for another runner or that could be a suspect. so what they're doing now between the f.b.i. and boston police department is they're looking at his direction of travel. the shot that they have of him is not really identifiable. it's from behind. so they're scoping out the network of cctv cameras trying to figure out from the direction he's coming from what other cameras would he have passd? can they identify the same individual this time from the front wand a face. and then based on that look and whatever other cameras they can se
or domestic. what will the f.b.i. do in these early hours? what kind of evidence are they looking for? >> what you're looking at here, scott, is a different kind of marathon which is all hands in boston. the entire joint terrorism fact force and the entire rest of the boston field division of the f.b.i. have been called in and they have set up a case management system that will track every lead that's coming in. it will be searchable so that they don't have anything fall through the cracks and they're going to start running at this. they'll look at those bomb fragments, calls from the public, what comes into e-mail and they'll be looking at all of the intelligence from the 16 agencies and the intelligence community to see can we get a leg up and a direction. and, of course, they'll start with that individual they're talking to. >> pelley: john miller, thank you very much. some of the best coverage has come from our cbs news affiliate wbz, they have been on the story since the moment of the first explosion. jonathan elias was there when the bombs went off. john, can you tell us what you saw? >>
